Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about starting therapy, our processes, and what to expect when you visit Forward Mind Psychology.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

No, you do not need a referral to see a psychologist at Forward Mind Psychology if you are paying privately. However, if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate for your sessions, you will need a valid referral and a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP or psychiatrist prior to your first appointment.

How long does a typical therapy session last?

A standard individual or couples therapy session lasts for 50 minutes. This allows the psychologist 10 minutes to write up clinical notes and prepare for their next client. Assessment sessions are typically much longer and can range from 2 to 4 hours depending on the type of testing.

Is everything I say completely confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of psychological practice. Everything discussed in your session remains strictly confidential. There are only a few legal exceptions to this rule, such as if your files are subpoenaed by a court, or if there is an immediate risk of harm to yourself or someone else. Your psychologist will explain this fully in your first session.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required varies greatly depending on your individual circumstances, the complexity of the issues you are facing, and your personal goals. Some clients find resolution in 6-10 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support over several months or years. Your psychologist will collaboratively develop a treatment plan with you.

Do you offer telehealth (online) appointments?

Yes, we offer secure telehealth appointments via video or phone for clients who prefer the convenience of accessing therapy from home or who are unable to attend the clinic in person. Medicare rebates apply to telehealth sessions in the same way they do for face-to-face appointments.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require a minimum of 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours notice incur a cancellation fee. This policy ensures we can offer the appointment slot to another client who may be in urgent need of support.
